Bike to Work

In Seattle it is becoming easier and easier to commute through the city. It is a great way to save money on gas, help the environment, and get some exercise. Although there are bike lanes and shared use paths appearing it is still good to be aware of what is going on around to keep the ride safe. Using hand signals when riding on city streets is something that helps both other riders and cars be aware of what is going to happen. When riding on the street, bikes are treated the same way as cars, and subject to all the same rules. Whether your commute is just down the street or across town, biking is a quick and easy way to get around. Here are some things that may help you out in your daily commute:

Helmet: required in King County and a must for riding on the streets
Front light: required in King County when riding after dusk
Rear light: so cars can seen you from both both directions
Lock: make sure that your bike is well protected while you are working
Rear rack: a way attach a backpack or basket
Panniers: waterproof bags to keep your food or change of clothes dry
Rain gear: don't let the rain stop you from biking
Bike computer: track how far you ride each day

Any time of the year is a good one to start riding to work, even if it is only one day a week, that will get you more saddle time on your bike.
